Children, Youth and Family Minister

 

Introduction

Mill Woods United is an affirming congregation that is progressive in its theologies, is inter-generational and youth oriented. Our desired candidate will facilitate and/or provide leadership for the development of relational ministry with children and youth at Mill Woods United Church and help build community and provide pastoral support to their families.

This position is for 13 hours per week (52 hours/month).

 

The Children, Youth and Family Minister will work with the Minister, the Children, Youth and Family Ministry Steering Team, and the Sunday School Volunteers

 

Accountable To:    MWUC Council

 

General

·   Provide a safe environment where children and youth will feel welcome and spiritually supported.

·   Be a spiritual mentor and offer pastoral care to children, youth and their families.

·   Work in a collegial leadership team with other staff including the Minister, Office Administrator and Custodian, youth leaders, music resource people, committees and volunteers.

·   Capitalize on the energy and gifts of people in the congregation

Responsibilities

1.      Sunday Morning Children and Youth Programming:

·  Ensure the purchase of appropriate curriculum resources

·   Take the lead in the recruitment, training, and support of leaders and teachers in partnership with the Minister, Sunday School Coordinator

·   Working with the Sunday School Coordinator and/or team ensure Sunday School runs as smoothly as possible (including maintaining current registration and attendance records, following up on absences in case of pastoral concerns, purchasing and maintaining appropriate supplies)

·  Participate in weekly Sunday worship services, including primary responsibility for the children’s story.

·  Take part in planning, implementing and participating in intergenerational worship services in collaboration with the Minister and others. 

 


2.       Youth Ministry:

·   Facilitate and/or provide leadership for the Junior (Grade 7-9) and Senior (Grade 10-12) age groups.

·   Work collaboratively with youth to identify and develop programming which encourages their spiritual growth and active participation in the life and mission of the congregation.

·   Promotion of youth involvement in church music.

·   Attend events, with youth, when needed, including some weekend retreats (ie., conference youth retreats).

·   Liaise with other congregations, Presbytery and Alberta Conference regarding programs and services for youth.

 

3.      Family Ministry:

·   Work collaboratively with families to identify and develop programming which encourages their spiritual growth and/or relates to family and parenting issues.

·  Organize intergenerational events that support the development of meaningful relationships between children and youth and adults.

·   Encourage the active participation of families in the life and mission of the congregation.

·   Provide pastoral support for families with children & youth.

·   In collaboration with the minister, act as a resource to parents to assist them in nurturing spirituality and faith at home.

·   Act as a resource to connect families with children and youth to appropriate community resources/programs as needed.

 

4. Administration:

·   Maintain a current database list of all children involved in the church.

·   Maintain a current database list of all youth involved in the church.

·   Maintain a current knowledge of community and church resources available for children, youth and their families.

·   Keep the congregation informed of children and youth ministry activities through the “Morning Messenger,” church newsletter, announcements from the pulpit, written reports to the Council and the Annual Report.

·  The Children, Youth and Family Minister is not expected to be involved in Presbytery, Conference or General Council work or committees.

·   Keep knowledge and skills current through continuing education and contact with peer groups (designated lay ministers’ group, etc.)

 

Salary

$16.00 – $20.00 per hour depending on skills and experience
